Tsedaka - Aviad Zemach

Ahavas Hesed (the Love of Hesed) , 2022

Polystyrene, wood and industrial paints
90 x 30 x 70 cm
31 x 39 x 12 in

The Hafetz Haim in his introduction to his book "Ahavas Hesed" quotes the gemora (Sanhedrin 98b) "The students of Rabbi Eliezer asked: 'What shall one do to be rewarded in the times of Mashiach?' He answered, one should be involved in Torah and acts of Hesed. This merit will stand for all future generations..."

The sculpture "Ahavas Hesed" depicts two similar figures, one standing and one sitting. The viewer is not able to discern which figure is giving and which is receiving. Perhaps the one requesting assistance is standing asking for assistance. Perhaps sitting and begging for help.

The artist has formed the hands such that the viewer does not know which is open to give and which to receive. One may think that when one gives tsedaka, or does a Hesed, that the giver is giving and the recipient is receiving. However, in reality, the opposite is true. One who gives is in fact receiving, and that which is received will continue to merit for future generations.
